Lawrence’s Jewish community will welcome the area’s first Torah scroll Sunday

Jewish communities in the Lawrence area will complete and welcome the area’s first Torah scroll Sunday, officials said in a release.

An authentic Torah scroll consists of between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment and exactly 304,805 letters, prepared according to specific Torah law requirements, Kansas University’s Chabad Center for Jewish Life explained.

On Sunday, an expert scribe from Israel will ink the final letters on the scroll, the release said. The scroll will then be taken out to the streets of Lawrence under a traditional canopy with a celebratory procession.

“This scroll is a very appropriate addition to the KU community, as it represents the unbroken chain of Jewish tradition and survival,” said Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel, the Chabad Center’s director.
