CARBONDALE — It's a non-assuming two-story house on Carbondale's west side, but it symbolizes a modern-day movement to assemble and teach Jewish people in this corner of the world.

It's Southern Illinois' home base for the Chabad, an outreach for the Jewish community, led locally by Rabbi Mendel Scheiman, a 27-year-old native from the Chicago area. Ordained as a rabbi in 2010, Scheiman came to Carbondale a few years later to head up the Chabad, which was a new undertaking here. He relocated here from Brooklyn, where he had just finished rabbinical studies at the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva in the Jewish Orthodox Hasidic neighborhood of Crown Heights in New York.
