BLACKSBURG, Va. (WSET) - The community of Virginia Tech came together Monday night after someone left racist leaflets at the Jewish Student Center on campus over the weekend.

They showed everyone that the light of unity will always conquer the darkness of hate.

"You have failed to divide us. You have brought us closer together in support of one another," said one of the Virginia Tech policeman.

The leaflets had hand-drawn swastikas and were left just one day after the university announced a Holocaust survivor would be coming to speak at an event in April.

"They wanted to send a message. We'll let's send an even greater message to let them know that what they're doing is not acceptable," said a student attending the rally.

Senator Tim Kaine released a statement condemning the hateful act:

I strongly condemn the cowardly acts of hate that are on the rise across our country, like the incident this weekend at the Chabad Librescu Jewish Student Center at Virginia Tech. Liviu Librescu was a hero who survived the Holocaust only to be killed in the Virginia Tech tragedy when he sacrificed his life to save his students. He represented the best of America. I stand with the Jewish community in Blacksburg, Jews across the country, and communities targeted for their race, ethnicity, religion, nation of origin, or sexual identities. I'll continue supporting policies to prevent hate crimes and calling on the Trump Administration to use all resources at its disposal to reduce discrimination and bring perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice.

The Co-Director of the Jewish Student Center hopes the event will raise awareness of any act of hate, especially Antisemitism, "I really hope that we all take this passion and determination that i'm seeing right here and use it for our fight to make us move forward and make us feel stronger."
