Syracuse, NY
In 2008, the movie "Defiance" was released, telling the story of the three Bielski brothers who saved thousands of Jewish people during World War II.
Monday night, Zvi Bielski, the son of Zus Bielski, spoke at Syracuse University. He shared the story of his father and two uncles, how they escaped captivity, built a safe haven community in the forest for Jewish people and fought off the Nazis.
Bielski says the movie is an important picture because it portrays the story of one of the largest armed Jewish resistance armies during World War II.
"The Bielski brothers saved 1,250 Jews during World War II and those numbers, the survivors and descendents actually there are 20,000 people alive today because of the people that they saved," Bielski said.
Monday night's presentation was hosted by the Chabad House Jewish Student Organization at Syracuse University.
